Association growth and pricing in India 3

From a pricing question to an evidence-based market growth strategy

A US-based professional association in science and engineering had an established presence in India and a strong global credential portfolio but price was constraining wider adoption among India's price-conscious, career-driven professionals. MCI India was engaged to develop a pricing strategy for selected portfolio of products, programs ad services. The assignment developed into a wider India growth playbook covering value, portfolio, partnerships and route to market.

THE CHALLENGE

A strong global brand, proven demand in India and adoption still constrained by price

Individual buyers valued employability, career progression and globally portable credentials, while employers prioritised technical competence, compliance and reduced operational risk. Historical demand was highly concentrated geographically, challenging conventional assumptions about where the international association should focus first. Our client needed to understand which prices genuinely exceeded perceived fair value, which should be held and how pricing could support a longer-term journey from an initial credential to sustained professional engagement.

THE SOLUTION

Diagnose. Price. Ramp. Expand

MCI India worked through four stages:

  • Diagnose: MCI India analysed three years of purchase history, research professionals and employers, and benchmark comparable global credentials.
  • Price: The next step was to combine willingness-to-pay research, value mapping, competitor benchmarking and demand modelling to identify where targeted adjustments were justified.
  • Ramp: A pathway was then designed from an initial certification into standards access, ongoing learning and membership.
  • Expand: MCI India translated the findings into an India growth playbook covering enterprise partnerships, delivery choices, institutional engagement and in-country execution. Pricing became the entry point to a wider market-development strategy.

The Results

An evidence-based pathway to growth in India

The research gave the association a clearer basis for making decisions about how to expand participation in India. Demand modelling indicated that selective price recalibration could improve accessibility while protecting commercial value; blanket discounts and over-bundling risked unnecessary margin leakage. The research also showed that customers placed greater value on course benefits and access to professional standards than on membership-price incentives. Certification emerged as the most effective entry point, supported by a longer-term value ramp into standards, professional engagement and membership. What began as a pricing study became a broader India monetisation, delivery and portfolio-growth playbook.

What associations can take from this:

  • Start with credentialing. It provides an immediate, career-relevant reason to engage.
  • Build value before asking for membership. Standards, learning and thought leadership can create the relationship first.
  • Choose the delivery model deliberately. Direct, partner and licensed models create different trade-offs in reach, control and economics.

FAQs around growing an association in a new market

How should a US association price certifications in India?

Start with what buyers consider fair, not the global list price. This study found that some price points were already within buyers' acceptable range while others were above perceived fair value. The recommendation was to adjust only where the evidence supported change, rather than use blanket discounting.

What do Indian professionals and employers value in a credential?

In this study, professionals valued employability, career progression and global portability. Employers valued technical competence, compliance and lower operational risk. The findings reinforced the need to connect price to the value different audiences attach to the credential.

Should an association license or partner locally in India?

Treat the delivery model as a strategic choice. Direct, partner and licensed approaches create different trade-offs in reach, control and economics. The right model should be selected deliberately against the association’s quality, market-development and commercial objectives.

Where in India should an association focus first?

Start with evidence of where demand already exists rather than assuming the capital region should be the first priority. In this study, approximately 90% of historical demand was concentrated in two regions, showing why associations should use their own customer data to select priority markets.

How can an association build engagement in India before membership?

Use a value ramp. Credentialing can create the first reason to engage, followed by standards access, ongoing learning and thought leadership. Membership can then become part of a longer professional relationship rather than the opening proposition.
